  • IRRIGATOR SAFETY | Inland Power

IRRIGATOR SAFETY SAFETY TIPS Follow these safety tips to help decrease the number of incidents of aircraft vs. power lines during aerial application: Be aware of how long a pilot is flying and self-assess from time to time. Pilots should familiarize themselves with the areas they are covering and assess all potential hazards. Span lengths between poles average 300’, though this distance can vary greatly. Wires between poles will sag several feet making them more difficult to judge. Pole heights are usually between 26’ to 30’. Pilots should be aware of line placement and hard to see poles. REPORT A SAFETY HAZARD To report a safety hazard or accident, please call Inland Power & Light at 800-747-7151. IRRIGATION PIPES AND ELECTRICITY DO NOT MIX Follow these safety tips when working around irrigation equipment: If irrigation equipment comes in contact with a power line, stay away…do not try to remove it yourself. Call our office immediately. Position the water jet streams so that there is no chance of them spraying onto power lines. Stay away from irrigation equipment and pipes during any lightning activity. Avoid moving irrigation equipment on windy days when pipes and equipment could be blown into nearby power lines. Carry pipes and equipment horizontal to the ground rather than vertical to minimize the risk of contact with power lines. SAFETY INFORMATION Click the image to view our irrigator safety brochure!

  • AGRICULTURAL INCENTIVES & REBATES | Inland Power

IRRIGATION & AGRICULTURAL INCENTIVES You work long, hard hours to keep your agricultural business productive, bountiful and profitable. But how much time does it leave for you to consider how to operate at a lower cost? Upgrading to more energy-efficient tools and devices is proven to help you do just that - without sacrificing productivity. And thanks to available Inland Power rebates, you can put some of that cash back into your wallet! Use this guide to learn more about potential energy-saving upgrades you can make to your business. Please note that the lighting calculator must be completed for pre-approval of projects to be considered for a rebate. Rebate amounts are $8.00 per tube and up to 70% of total project cost. For more information on lighting rebates, please visit COMMERCIAL LIGHTING | Inland Power . conservation@inlandpower.com (509) 789-1801 (509) 747-7151 AVAILABLE REBATE OPPORTUNITIES IRRIGATION PUMP TESTING AND SYSTEM ANALYSIS Regular maintenance and repairs keep your irrigation system running; however, it may not identify the inefficiencies that drive higher operating costs as your equipment ages. Pump testing can determine if you would benefit from a rebuild, or if replacement is a better option. Analysis can also identify opportunities to increase the efficiency of the irrigation delivery system. As technology has advanced, many technologies and upgrades have shown to improve irrigation while reducing wasted water and energy. Inland Power pays for these inspections by industry professionals and the upgrades made to your system based on the information revealed in your analysis may be eligible for rebates. NEW HIGH-EFFICIENCY IRRIGATION PUMPS (up to $70 per horsepower) Over time, some irrigation pumps may become worn out or less efficient than ideal. Or, your old irrigation pump might not be a good match to your current system requirements. Installing a new, more efficient pump will help restore your irrigation system to the best operating point and save money. VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVES (VFD) (up to $100 per horsepower) VFDs are designed to adjust water-pump motor speed to match your changing irrigation needs, controlling the frequency of the electrical power that's supplied to your motor. Even minor speed adjustments using a VFD can create big energy savings, often as much as 10 to 20 percent. You will also get greater precision and tighter control over water distribution and pressure, and help the pump match-flow requirements. A calculator is available to make estimating savings and applying for rebates easier than ever. If installed with a new high-efficiency irrigation pump, the energy savings could be even greater. PUMP HOUSE THERMOSTATIC CONTROLS ($14 per outlet) During cold winters, pump house temperatures can get below zero and threaten to freeze or burst pipes. Heaters are often used to prevent freezing conditions during those cold winter months. Thermostatic controls manage the operation of the heaters to prevent the freezing of pipes and tanks, and shut off automatically when the threat of freezing has passed. installation of thermostatic controls can be as simple as plugging the device in between the space heater and the outlet. ENERGY FREE LIVESTOCK WATERERS ($165) Do you take care of livestock during the winter months? An immersion tank heater uses a lot of electricity. Replace the tank with a non-electric tank, or add a thermostatically controlled outlet to limit tank-heater operation on freezing days but still provide fresh water to your animals. LOW ELEVATION SPRAY APPLICATION (LESA) (up to $18 per drop) LESA can provide more uniform irrigation application for all of your crops through the conversion of your center pivot irrigation system to lower sprinkler heads, bringing them closer to crops. This greatly reduces water evaporation during irrigation, and reduces the overall pressure and energy required. Must be sit 3 feet or less above ground. LOW ENERGY PRECISION APPLICATION (LEPA) (up to $18 per drop) LEPA has been a successful irrigation strategy for more than 25 years, popular in water-short areas such as the high plains. The typical set-up is tubing located in every other furrow, with a bubbler located on the end of the tubing. In many cases, the bubbler is covered with a sock to help distribute the water. With low-pressure regulators (e.g., 10 Psi) and no wind drift, LEPA is energy and water efficient. Care should be taken to plant in circles and address any potential runoff issues. MOBILE DRIP IRRIGATION (MDI) (up to $18 per drop) MDI is a newer strategy for saving water. It is similar to LEPA, except the irrigation equipment and tubing are located on the ground. The MDI tubing has multiple emitters, depending on the location along the pivot. For instance, the last span may have MDI tubing that is more than 50 feet long. With low-pressure regulators (e.g., 5 to 10 Psi) and no wind drift, MDI is energy and water efficient. MID ELEVATION SPRAY APPLICATION (MESA) (up to $15 per drop) MESA irrigation features rotating or spray-type sprinklers located on drop tubes, generally located 5 to 10 feet above ground level. There are many types of irrigation sprinklers, some with larger droplets that can reduce wind drift and evaporation to prevent wasted water. MESA also creates uniformity in water delivery for predictable results. Uniformity is important because lower pressure at the furthest sprinklers could mean crops at the end of the pivot are under-watered, while crops closest to the pivot are drenched. Low-pressure regulators ranging from 15 to 25 Psi are typically used to ensure individual sprinklers have nearly constant pressure at the nozzle, regardless of terrain. Saving water in irrigation means less energy is required to pump the water, which helps reduce costs. IRRIGATION HARDWARE AND SPRINKLER PACKAGES ($1 - $4) Calcification, heavy sediment, and other conditions cause buildup that, over time, can reduce the efficiency of water delivery in irrigation. Energy-efficient irrigation hardware, such as new nozzles and gaskets, can provide more uniform water application, reduce runoff, and save energy. As equipment wears out, upgrading to more energy-efficient hardware is one of the easiest ways to start saving water and energy. WATER SYSTEM LEAK ABATEMENT Not all leaks in large water distribution systems are visible. Municipal water districts, golf courses, and irrigation distribution systems are examples of systems that may benefit from a leak-detection system survey. These surveys are typically conducted by specialty companies that use ultrasonic sound checks or other specialized equipment. Repairs made as a result of a survey help reduce water and pumping costs, and may be eligible for energy-efficiency rebates. MOTOR REWIND When a motor fails, the user or owner face three choices: to rewind to a lower efficiency, to rewind and maintain the original efficiency to replace it with a new motor of either an EPact or Premium Efficiency Design If the motor rewind resulted in the motor maintaining its original efficiency, it is commonly called a Green Rewind. The Green Motor Rewind can happen at the Green Motor Dealership if offered. If your dealership does not offer, the alternative contacting The Green Motors Practices Group (GMPG). The GMPG is a non-profit organization that identifies, promotes and verifies only excellent member motor service centers. These companies are committed to consistently producing repair/rewinds that retain or improve reliability and efficiency and provide on-site motor driven systems assistance. Key Advantages to the Green Motor Initiative ensures quality rewinding Increases NEMA premium value saves up to 40% of the cost of new Contributes to local economy recycles 98.5% of motor materials uses third-party oversight standards. For more information, contact Green Motors Practices Group: (503) 922-1743 info@greenmotors.org LED LIGHTING FOR SHOPS AND EXTERIOR USES In addition to energy-cost savings of 25 to 50 percent, energy-efficient Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lighting upgrades and controls can increase visual acuity and lighting equipment life, improve security, and may also improve worker safety, productivity, and quality of work. You can save energy by converting old incandescent, halogen, mercury vapor, high pressure sodium and fluorescent lights to more efficient LEDs anywhere on your farm where lights are used. LEDs have improved significantly in the past 10 years, lasting much longer than other types of bulbs, and come in a wide selection of colors and color temperatures (warm or cool light). For greater savings, add controls to these lighting systems to ensure they only operate when needed. CUSTOM PROJECTS Farm buildings and systems are often highly complex and unique. For this reason, many agricultural energy-efficiency opportunities are best approached as custom projects. For these projects, Inland has a team of customer service engineers available to help identify custom project opportunities for retrofit and new construction. Any project expected to save energy is potentially eligible.
