Heat pumps are one of the most energy efficient types of heating available today. A properly installed heat pump can deliver one-and-a-half to four times more heat energy to a home than it consumes. This is possible because heat pumps move heat rather than converting it from fuels such as natural gas, oil or propane.

There are two common types of heat pumps: air source heat pumps and geothermal or ground source heat pumps. Air source heat pumps get their heat from outdoor air. Geothermal heat pumps gather solar heat that has been stored in the ground.

Unfortunately, energy savings gained from a heat pump's superior efficiency are often lost due to poor installation, duct losses and inadequate air-flow and maintenance. By having your heat pump installed and certified by a Performance Tested Comfort Systems (PTCS) certified contractor, not only will you be assured that your system is operating at peak efficiency, you will also qualify for a rebate from Inland Power & Light. PTCS Certified Air Source HP Installed on All-electric Homes; $1400 (for purchases made after March 31,2009) 

PTCS Certified Air Source HP Replacement; $650

PTCS Certified Air Source HP Installed on Homes with Natural Gas, Propane or Oil Heat; $650

PTCS Certified Duct Sealing on Qualifying Homes; $400-$500 (must have electricity as a primary heating source)

Qualifying Mini Split "Ductless" HP Installations on Homes with Electric Zonal Heating; $1500 (call for details)

Heat pumps must meet efficiency minimums of an 8.5 Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF) and a 14 Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). Homes with 50% or more of their ductwork outside of a conditioned space must have the ducts tested and sealed by a PTCS certified contractor to qualify for a Heat Pump rebate. PTCS Certified Geothermal Heat Pump - $3,000

Geothermal heat pump Installers/Technicians must also have an International Ground Source Heat Pump Association (IGSHPA) certification. Homes with 50% or more of their ductwork outside of a conditioned space must have the ducts tested and sealed by a PTCS certified contractor to qualify for a Heat Pump rebate.
